Finding a Catamaran Slip: Beam, Dockage and Yard Access

Before buying a catamaran, confirm berth width, the full dockage quote, liveaboard rules and a yard that can handle the boat.

Find somewhere for the actual boat

A listing’s model number is not a berth measurement. Before committing to a catamaran, send prospective marinas the documented length overall, maximum beam and draft of the particular boat. Include any projections or equipment that affect the space it needs, and ask how the marina measures vessels for billing and acceptance.

A marina saying it accepts “boats up to 50 feet” does not answer whether it can berth a wide catamaran. Ask for the proposed arrangement, available clear width and manoeuvring access. Treat a waitlist as a waitlist, not a reservation you can build a delivery plan around.

Ask for a complete written quote

Dockage structures differ. Key West Bight, for example, publishes a separate transient rate category for space above an 18-foot beam. That does not establish a universal catamaran surcharge; it demonstrates why a generic per-foot rate can be the wrong starting point.

Request a quote for your dates and your vessel, showing the billing length or minimum, taxes, electricity, water, deposits and any other required charges. Ask whether a quoted monthly figure means a calendar month, a daily rate within a longer stay or another arrangement. Small differences in the wording can change the comparison substantially.

Check whether your intended use is allowed

Keeping a boat in a marina, staying aboard occasionally and living aboard are separate questions. Key West Bight’s published rules, for example, distinguish recreational dockage from liveaboard arrangements. Read the rules for the marina you intend to use rather than carrying assumptions from another location.

Also ask about contractors, pets, parking, deliveries, dinghy storage and unattended periods. If you plan to rent out or charter the yacht, raise that at the start. A berth suitable for a private owner may not permit the business activity you have in mind.

Confirm yard access before it becomes urgent

Berth availability does not prove that the nearby yard can lift the yacht. Corpus Christi’s municipal service yard publishes separate lift limits for beam and capacity, illustrating why both measurements matter. Ask your chosen yard about the actual yacht, its loaded condition and the manufacturer’s lifting instructions.

Find out how far ahead routine haulouts are booked and what options exist for an unexpected repair. Include the travel required to reach a suitable yard in your ownership plan. A cheaper home berth is less attractive if every scheduled haulout creates a complicated relocation.

Compare arrangements using the same year

Create a calendar with months at the home berth, cruising periods and planned yard work. For each option, use the same dates and the same vessel details. Record what happens to the berth charge while you are away and whether returning to the same space is guaranteed.

Ask for the marina’s storm procedures and the obligations in your berth agreement, then discuss them with your insurer. Finish with written confirmation of availability and costs. A beautiful boat with nowhere workable to keep or maintain it is still an incomplete purchase plan.
