Crew information

Captain: Jason Groeningen Crew: Isabella Matterson, Laura Kropman, Lydia, Ben Please get in touch with us directly for a full, up to date crew profile. Captain: Jason Groeningen Jason has a huge respect for time and how quickly life flies by, and because of this he is motivated every day to get out and explore the world. Over 10 years of professional sailing has given him more adventures than he can count and has taught him humility, patience and determination. Jason entered the superyacht industry in 2013, quickly working his way up to the role of Charter Captain via the deck and engine room. With over 100 charters under his belt, he specialises in catamarans and has sailed over 48,000nm, covering most of the Med and Caribbean. For Jason, it is the joy of seeing his guests experience new adventures that inspires him to deliver the best charter possible, and this is why he wakes up excited every day of a charter, to see what life has in store for him and what lessons and triumphs it will bring him. Jason’s passions, aside from sailing, include diving (he has is PADI Rescue Diver), fishing and ocean preservations and sustainability. Chef (Rotational): Isabella Matterson Isabella is from Cape Town, South Africa. She grew up surfing on the coasts of Cape Town and has always had a love for the ocean and outdoors. It was only natural that she joined the yachting industry with such a lust to travel and see the world. Once she joined the industry, Isabella found a love for sailing. She has sailed the East Coast of the USA, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. After gaining her sea time, Isabella undertook her Captain’s licence and now holds a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore 200 GT. She also holds her PADI Dive-Master and AIDA Free Diver Certification. Isabella’s passion for cooking started whilst living at home cooking for her family and friends. She became inspired to take on a culinary career while working with some highly qualified yacht chefs aboard a variety of sailing vessels. She later completed a professional cooking course at the renowned Ashburton Chefs Academy in the UK. Isabella always uses fresh local ingredients of the highest quality available. She will create a unique and exciting menu plan according to your preferences. Her main goal is creating nutritious meals, while getting the opportunity to share her passion for food with others. Chef (Rotational): Laura Kropman Laura grew up in South Africa, surrounded by mountains and incredible coastlines, which sparked a deep appreciation for the natural world. Cooking has become an extension of that connection, a way to express the beauty of the land and sea through colourful, seasonal and nourishing food. After finishing school, she spent time working on yachts before returning home to complete her classical chef training. Her journey in the kitchen soon evolved into a broader interest in sustainability, food systems and farming, allowing her to better understand the ingredients she works with. Over the past four years, Laura has dedicated herself to exploring seasonal and wild flavours, diving for ingredients, foraging for wild mushrooms and indigenous plants, and learning traditional preservation techniques. She shares this knowledge through workshops and pop-up events, and has worked across a range of settings, including lodges, private homes and award-winning kitchens. She has also curated bespoke culinary experiences for private clients and leading hotels and restaurants. When she’s not cooking or foraging, Laura enjoys spending time outdoors — whether on her yoga mat, running or hiking in the mountains, surfing, swimming or diving in the ocean. She also loves experimenting with fermentation and working with clay. Working on a yacht offers a unique opportunity to explore global flavours, discover new ingredients and share the tastes of the places travelled. Laura looks forward to creating dishes that reflect the journey and the adventures experienced on board La Gatta. Stewardess: Lydia Lydia was born and raised in sunny Lancashire, England, where her love for the outdoors and adventure first began. Drawn to the ocean and an active lifestyle, she found her perfect fit in yachting, combining her passion for travel with exceptional guest service. Lydia loves creating five-star holidays that guests will remember for a lifetime. She takes pride in delivering attentive, personalized service, and ensuring every guest feels relaxed, comfortable, and well cared for throughout their stay. When she is not onboard, Lydia enjoys hiking, wakeboarding, diving, and snowboarding. She is currently studying to become a personal trainer, reflecting her passion for health and fitness. When she is not at the beach, on the water or exploring the mountains, you will find her watching the sunrise with a morning coffee or enjoying a beautiful sunset after a day at sea! Deckhand: Ben Ben is from the South of England, where he grew up on the water, driving boats along the English coastline and developing a lifelong passion for the sea. With a background in sailing and watersports instruction, he brings a wealth of practical knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism to life onboard. Ben takes great pride in ensuring guests have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience. Whether assisting with water toys, driving guests to and from shore, or maintaining the yacht to the highest standards, he is always ready to lend a hand. With his positive attitude and beaming smile, Ben enjoys creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere for guests of all ages. When he’s not on deck, Ben enjoys running, hiking, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and snowboarding. He is currently studying for his captain’s license and hopes to one day take the helm as a captain himself. His passion for the ocean, dedication to guest experience, and friendly personality make him a valued member of the crew.
