Lithium conversion: which upgrades are easy to overlook?

Sofia B. · SampleSep 9, 2026

We are replacing an aging AGM bank with lithium. The batteries get most of the attention, but I know charging sources and protection matter just as much. What components or installation details are commonly missed in a complete conversion?

The alternators, shore charger, solar controllers and battery-management system all need to agree on charging limits. We also upgraded cable protection, added a proper Class T fuse, checked ventilation and verified that the alternators could not overheat during sustained charging. Treat it as a system redesign, not a battery swap.

Make sure there is a safe way to disconnect charging if the BMS opens the battery circuit. We added external regulators and temperature sensors, then documented the settings for every charging source. The commissioning checklist was almost as important as the hardware.
