Questions
10 questionsWhat is one catamaran feature you would not buy without again?
After owning or chartering a few different catamarans, which feature moved from “nice to have” to essential for you? It could be part of the layout, sailing setup, mechanical systems or something surprisingly small.
What should I check before booking a crewed catamaran charter?
This will be our family’s first crewed charter. Beyond the yacht photos and cabin count, what questions should we ask about the crew, meal planning, cruising area, extra costs and daily itinerary before placing a deposit?
What should a first-time catamaran buyer ask during the survey?
We have found a boat that appears to fit our plans and are preparing for the survey and sea trial. What catamaran-specific areas deserve extra attention, and which questions helped you understand the difference between a manageable project and a costly surprise?
What is a great two-week Bahamas route for a first catamaran trip?
We are comfortable handling a catamaran but new to the Exumas. We would like protected anchorages, good snorkeling, a few places to reprovision and enough flexibility for weather days. Where would you start and finish, and which stops deserve more than one night?

How much solar is enough for full-time cruising on a 45-foot catamaran?
We are planning a mostly off-grid Caribbean season with two laptops, refrigeration, a watermaker and occasional induction cooking. The boat currently has 800 watts of solar and 600 amp-hours of lithium. Owners with a similar setup: what is your real daily usage, and how often do you still run an engine or generator?
How do you reduce bridge-deck slamming in short, steep seas?
On our last passage we had an uncomfortable quartering sea and more bridge-deck impact than expected. Besides slowing down, what sail combinations, headings or weight-distribution changes have worked for you? I am especially interested in practical adjustments you can make underway.
What did your first-year maintenance budget actually look like?
I keep seeing rules of thumb based on a percentage of purchase price, but I would love to hear real examples. For a used 40–45 foot cruising catamaran, what surprised you during the first year and which expenses would you plan for before closing?
Owner’s version or four-cabin layout for long-term cruising?
We are a couple planning to live aboard for most of the year, with friends and family visiting a few times each season. The owner’s hull looks wonderful, but the extra cabin could improve resale and flexibility. Which layout did you choose, and would you choose it again?
Lithium conversion: which upgrades are easy to overlook?
We are replacing an aging AGM bank with lithium. The batteries get most of the attention, but I know charging sources and protection matter just as much. What components or installation details are commonly missed in a complete conversion?
Is a watermaker worth it for weekend and seasonal cruising?
Most of our trips are long weekends with one or two three-week cruises each year. We usually have marina access at the beginning and end, but we love staying at anchor. Did a watermaker meaningfully change how you cruise, or did the maintenance outweigh the convenience?
